Man finds Dad's Korean War Garand
Jim Richardson had the serial number from the M1. 30 cal. Garand his father carried during his stint in the Korean War. Even though some 7 million of the rifles were made (in that serial no. range, I presume) he found the rifle at a gun broker in Kentucky.
"I couldn't even talk when he gave it to me," Virgil Richardson told The Flint Journal. "It didn't even have to be the same gun to be important to me."Jim gave his father Virgil the rifle early for his birthday (isn't that sweet?) and they are going to the range on that day to shoot it and celebrate.
About 7 million of the sturdy rifles were produced during the Korean War period, making the odds of finding the right one so long that the broker didn't believe the serial number matched, said Jim Richardson, 54, of Saginaw County's Frankenmuth, about 70 miles northwest of Detroit.
"After the war, the soldiers couldn't bring the rifles back with them," Jim Richardson said. "They stayed in Korea (until the 1980s), when they were able to be imported back to the United States."
"What shocked me the most is how very heavy it is," he said. "I have trouble now holding it up and aiming it. I guess they were made for 20- and 21-year-olds."Boy, no kidding. I sympathize, I really do.

Too bad if Obama & Biden had their way Garand's would be banned as "assault weapons."
I trained on a M1 Garand in the fifties. I was pretty young, weighed 140 lbs, and the rifle weighed 9 3/4 pounds. I am right-handed, but because I am left-eye dominant, I fired the rifle left-handed. That meant I used my right arm to support the rifle, otherwise, I would have had trouble holding on target.
To make my arm stronger,I would hold a broom, by the end, out from my body, parallel to the ground to build up my shoulder.
I fell in love with the practically indestructible Garand, with it's mahogany stock, and it's solid feel. I practiced field-stripping & putting it back together, until I got pretty good at it.
I can just imagine your father's face, as he held the M1 in his hands. I may just go out and get myself one.
