Presidential and Congressional meddling in everything
Bush has signed the new energy bill. I guess once your street cred as a conservative is shot you can just go wild and Ninny Nanny the whole country, not to mention the world.
The legislation signed by Bush at a ceremony at the Energy Department requires automakers to increase fuel efficiency by 40 percent to an industry average 35 miles per gallon by 2020. It also ramps up production of ethanol use to 36 billion gallons a year by 2022.Making it mandatory, what the people wanted anyway and the free market would provide, that's leadership.
It requires refineries to increase the use of ethanol from about 6 billion gallons a year this year to 36 billion gallons by 2022 and mandates that by then at least 21 billion gallons are to come from feedstocks other than corn. Not that any of this is any of the federal governments business. Not content to meddle just in lightbulbs, the price of anything that uses energy just went up. Thank congress. Thanks Georgie.
Bush praised that provision which would spur the development of ethanol from cellulosic feedstocks such as prairie grass and wood chips.
"We understand the hog growers are getting nervous. The price of corn is up," said the president.

The bill also calls for improved energy efficiency of appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers, and a 70 percent increase in the efficiency of light bulbs. It also calls for energy efficiency improvements in federal buildings and construction of commercial buildings.
UPDATE: Joe has more.

But, in the same day's work, he sicced the EPA on the Kali air Kwality Kommisars. The EPA told them, and the ten or so states with them doing their bidding, to stand down, the EPA is the steward of the nation's air, not the Krazy Kalis.
This is HUGE. If the EPA can shut down the Kali zero-emissions bulltwaddle, the auto industry has a chance of actually making decent efficiency gains that we will be able to afford.
Under the Kali program, we were going to have to eat the R&D costs for idiocies like Hydrogen cars, Fuel Cell cars, and the micro voltswagons. We were going to be prohibited from buying diesel pickups with decent power.
Of course, Kali will go sniveling to the Ninth Circus in Swishy SFO, which will probably agree with them, but if THAT gets to the Supremes, the Ninth will be told, AGAIN, to get off their high horse.
When the final numbers are in, it was a GOOD day.
